Mag-Dyno

A traditional Mag-Dyno for people who want to retain their original appearance and combined dynamo and don't want to rely on a battery charging system.

This is a deviation from our normal practice of only supplying completely new instruments but it is as close as you will get to a new mag-dyno that really works.  

mag-dyno pictureWe have been asked for a solution for the "tired" mag-dynos that were fitted to hundreds of thousands of British bikes.  The BT-H, MD1R mag-dyno conversion is for people who want  to  enjoy the benefits of modern ignition technology and be able to refit their original dynamo without having to upgrade their machines charging system.  This is NOT a rewind, conversion to battery or normal renovation and in fact uses none of the original mag-dyno's electrical components.

We build our magneto generator technology inside your case.  

The original mag-dyno is stripped and the original armature is disposed of.  The insides are machined out,  the cases are cleaned and bead blasted before proper steel bearing housings are bolted in.  Our BT-H magneto generator assembly is then fitted inside.  This gives you all the usual benefits of a new BT-H magneto.  You get a "new" mag-dyno with electronic advance/retard, proper journal bearings and no points.  It is supremely easy to time and because it is a magneto you won't be stranded if your battery or charging system fails.  A very small, external, high tension coil is supplied with this instrument.  This can easily be fitted in any suitable out of the way place on the bike.  The icing on the cake is a new end cap and retaining clip manufactured in stainless steel.

The picture to the right is the first "BT-H mag-dyno" we made.  It is fitted to Tony's Ariel 350 that he has owned for over 30 years.  It still has the original, tarnished spring clip and end cap.  (Is this taking originality too far?)  
These parts are replaced with new  stainless steel components on your magneto so your magneto will come back looking and working better than it ever did when new.

Tony and wife Linda took part in a week long Irish vintage event using his Ariel with the BT-H mag-dyno upgrade fitted.  He was able to report on his return that they had covered over 1000 miles and the event was excellent.  The Ariel had always started first kick and performed flawlessly the whole of the time.  It attracted quite a lot of interest, especially from the the owners of the bikes that were a little "reluctant" to perform in the sometimes inclement conditions. Note 1.  The exchange price is for your old mag-dyno if it has a useable body, end castings and the clutch mechanism parts that operate on the fibre wheel.  You do not need to dismantle your mag-dyno before you send it.

N.B. We do not supply or service the dynamo part of a mag-dyno.
